I always get really nervous before I start cutting fabric because I get so attached to it, and the whole potentiality of a huge, uncut swatch of cloth. I psych myself out (which is, incidentally, the only way I ever get psyched out) and end up postponing the project, which is why I never get costume/clothing projects finished unless I'm on a timeline.

Also, this is why I spent the last hour-and-a-half updating my LJ icons, finding knitted-cardigan patterns, and trying to find some cute granny boots on eBay. Incidentally, I found many cute granny boots (perhaps even a pair I might buy), a couple amaaaazing cardigan patterns, and about a billion awesome LJ icons. I had to fight really hard not to have an unbalanced amount of Doctor-Who icons. I think I managed, but only 'cause I found some Vala <3.

Perhaps I will go to the library- No! No! Must finish adorable sundress! Okay, I'm going to the basement/workshop/sewing room RIGHT NOW. I will not even check my yahoo e-mail until I get some serious work done.

OKAY. Going now.

Apparently there is a TARDIS money box that has the Ninth Doctor and Rose on the inside instead of the Tenth Doctor and Martha! I... I kind-of want it. Is it weird to have two TARDIS money boxes? Like, too weird?

Convergence 2009! [Jul. 6th, 2009|04:53 pm]
Back from Convergence! Unpacked, and pictures posted:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/70922136@N00/sets/72157620917174031/

Also, Jackie, Vickie, post your pictures too! I wanna see 'em.

Taking the rest of today and tomorrow the chill out and detox. I had unbelievable amounts of fun, but it's back to the real life, and I have a lot of important/lame decisions to make!

Doing some writing again, which is excellent! I have a script idea I'm finally ready to start hammering away at (it involves time travel!) and a poem or two. It goes like this:

First coupled with and then devour'd.
First lover and then lunch.

It's about cannibalism! Well, like, emotional cannibalism. Metaphorical cannibalism.

In addition, I have one season of Doctor Who to watch, and about a billion seasons of Lost, plus all those books I didn't finish on the train. And Jumanji's on TV (remember Jumanji?!) so I totally have to watch that. Luckily, I don't have any big costume projects to work on. No excuse not to write.

Alright, to the pen, then! Be back- OH! Wait! I forgot about my fantastic TARDIS money bank! It DOES talk. All sorts of Martha-Jones-and-the-Doctor quotes! And when I close the doors, it totally does the VWOOOP VWOOOOP VWOOOOOP thing and the light at the top flashes. <3333. I am going to save SO MANY coins with this bank!

[Current Mood | busy]

I'm only posting because I uploaded a new mood theme and I'm really excited about it! It's totally Vala Mal Doran flavored. WIN.

In other news, I just wasted a lot of my very precious time uploading a new theme when I should be working on the BILLIONS of projects I need to get done. Most of them - all of them? - are for Convergence, which is in LESS THAN A WEEK YAAAAAAY!

So that's all the update you get, because I am way rushed. BYE!

Costuming post! [Jun. 13th, 2009|05:07 pm]
All sorts of costuming things to say!
for Vala: Found pants for the costume! This was harder than I expected, because she doesn't really wear regulation military clothes for a huge chunk of the show, even while she's working at Stargate Command. Luckily, I have a pair of old green cargo pants that look JUST right. I've had them for, like, 8 years and I was *finally* going to throw them away (they were even in my going-to-Goodwill bag). This is good news, because it means they were free, but bad news because now that my hording clothes has been justified, it will NEVER STOP.

Next thing to find is the jacket, which is also non-regulation. I will be getting a BDU jacket and doing things to it, though, so it'll be alright.

Steampunkery:
Got my watch case/watch parts today. Very exciting! I need to find sometime to make up some solid perfume (now that I have everything I need!)

Also, I have made literally NO progress on my mini top hat. Well, I bought some brown ribbon and red-orange-brown feathers, but I haven't yet attached them. I need a neat button or something to add to the back, as well as some hot-glue-gun sticks to attach it. It looks really good, though! Will post photos upon completion (soon, hopefully).

Secret steampunkery project:
Still secret! The plans for it have changed a LOT, so I'm still working on the construction. It's kind-of hard to do alone, but I'll have to have my mom help (sigh).

The mom-thing is a big bummer, still. She's slowly pushing me out, but at least I don't think it's on purpose. She keeps talking about things she's going to do to the house- add an island in the kitchen, buy a sofa (done). She also wants to get a classy bar, and a big screen TV, and a fancy desk, and... where is she going to PUT all of it? I don't think she's thought it through, because the only place for a desk is the room I'm living in right now. So, slowly but surely...

Man, what a depressing note to end such a happy post on. How about this for an ending: I totally have Flight of the Conchords stuck in my head:

like Flowers for Algernon [Jun. 3rd, 2009|09:37 pm]
Instead of returning from Yellowstone in November, like my mother said she would, she will be moving back Sunday. For good, for keeps. It just wasn't working out, she said, I'm coming back SUNDAY, she said. I'm welcome to stay- but only because she needs someone to be an emotional crutch for her, which I just I just can't do. And I know living with her will be like, because it will be just like before. I'll be a burden. I'll be a guest. I was a guest in my own home for my entire life, and I thought I'd finally gotten a break. I thought I had months. I just finished updating my address in all my ebay/etsy/paypal sites. I STILL haven't finished unpacking, which I guess is good.

I have literally been nauseous about it since I heard. I'm so very, very, very tired of this.

Just to get this out of the way, Plants vs Zombies is unbearably addictive! If it didn't jerk my computer around, I would TOTALLY have bought it after the free trial.

Today has been lovely. I have crafted a little- just need to attach the straps to my re-conned goggles and they will be DONE- watched some TV, internet'd, and hung oooout. Waited for a break in the rain to bike up to Sacred Grounds and grab some falafel. Also stopped by la boucherie, and got some classy italian sausages and twice-baked potatoes and fresh cheese. Then back home for Doctor Who!

As for my car, which was successfully towed yesterday, the repairs will cost $330, for labor and a new fuel injection pump. Could be worse! I should have it back tomorrow, Thursday at the latest.

Now, to kick back and be awesooooome.

Watching Dr. Who on the internets! It is part of my Convergence prep. I'm only on the second episode, but I'm really enjoying it so far! Christopher Eccleston is like a poor man's Huge Laurie.

He's FINALLY FINALLY GONE.

Sunday Barbecue was truly, truly epic. We grilled for about six hours, and then we went and saw Wolverine, then we came back and ate some more. It was ridiculous! We had burgers, hot dogs, brats, chicken, grilled pineapple, and kabobs. And that was just on the grill! In short, I have a LOOOT of leftovers.

Also, in sad-but-true news, I almost scheduled an intern-meeting with Sean on Friday. Collin had to remind me that I had plans that day. Birthday plans. Because Friday's my birthday. Plans are still being formed- everything from Ren Faire to Flashlight Night at City Museum to a double showing of UP and Drag Me To Hell. Nothing 100% for-sure yet.

Cable is wonderful; I am watching the end of Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back, which will be followed by Star Wars: Return of the Jedi! Exciting evening, Y/Y?

I bought fresh homegrown strawberries for the lady two doors down! They're small, but they're TASTY. And she sells fresh flowers at the Farmer's Market, which I am *so* going to next week. Fresh flowers in my own house! I feel like a GROWN UP PERSON.

Poetry night was a rousing success! Although I don't consider it a measure of success, we did have a lot of wine. Everybody read from their chapbooks, and we even got Dooty (who brought nothing with him) and A.Funk (the professor) to read. A.Funk also convinced us to start getting together regularly to have, like, a poetry... consortium? gang? I feel like there's a real word for a gathering of poets, but I don't remember what it is. She says because we're all pretty much on the same level of skill (our level: Awesome) and age and whatnot, we should keep this momentum up. We agreed, so as hostess, it will be my responsibility to force them into it.

All of my friends were really bitter about not being invited to the class. They were all getting together to hang out, but since I already had plans, I couldn't. They all drank and wrote poems, then threatened to come up to my house to read them for everybody.

Had a break from Lost, but apparently Caitlin already finished season 1, so I will have to start back up tonight. Then I'll have a break, because she's watching them via Netflix discs, I think, so there will be a shipping delay.

Alright, off to work for me! Is it wrong that I'm looking forward to work as a break from home? It was a lot like this before I moved out, you know.

Collin has got me on a serious Lost-watching regimen. Last night we watched episodes until I just couldn't take it any more and said I was tired, and then as soon as I hopped on my computer, he told me to load up the next episode. I think what's bugging me is that he's not even watching the episodes with me! He's reading! It's like he's supervising me, like I couldn't manage this on my own. He's right, I *couldn't* manage this on my own because I wouldn't WANT to.

I *did* get really excited yesterday afternoon because my friend Caitlin is ALSO watching Lost for the first time, and she's at almost the same point as I am. It's awesome because we still feel all the same way towards certain characters! It is the only thing keeping this worthwhile.

But tonight we hang out with Sean, Stacey, and Vickie!! This I am looking forward to extremely!

Okay, off to try and fix my basement shower. Promise the next post will be less whiny and more entertaining.

Brief update, because I forgot what I was going to post!

Weekend in Iowa was exhausting, too much time with Collin whittles away my ability to be social. He can be truly dense sometimes.

Since moving into my new house, I have noticed a distinct inability to socialize. Now that I really don't have to see anybody, ever, all day, it's hard to find the motivation to do so.

Furthermore, in the week I've been here, two people- TWO!- have asked to move in with me, rent-free. The first was my friend Jessica, whose roommate (the other Jessica) is moving back home. She has about two months where she doesn't have a roommate, so I can understand her asking. I'm still trying to decide if I'll let her. I mean, I want to be a good friend and help her out of a tight spot, but if I don't HAVE to have a roommate, why would I want one? Also, she's a bit of a slob, and I've already got my hands full with the kittens.

The other person was MAYO. SRSLY. He wants to save money before he moves to Chicago. There's no no no no way he's going to move in. Especially since immediately thereafter he told me he's going to buy a new car, even though his old one is fine. Also, dude, no.

Started watching Lost this weekend, thoroughly against my will. Collin's all, you know, "let's watch a hundred hours of Lost instead of allowing you to come to the show on your own!" I want to like it, but under these circumstances, I also want to spite Collin by not liking it at all.

Trying not to delve into Collin-issues, but I just wish he weren't so Collin all the time. It's mean, I know, but I can't help but want a break. I can't GET a break without hurting his feelings, though, and getting guilt-tripped into un-hurting his feelings. SO FRUSTRATED WITH HIM. I just spent over 100 hours straight with him. He says things like "I know you like your alone time, I know you like being by yourself" and then he invites himself over to spend a week at my house. Sometimes he reminds me of one of those pull-string dolls that can speak a couple of phrases. It's like that. Collin has, like, five jokes and those five jokes just get strolled through on infinite loop. GAAAH.

Okay, okay, I have a kitten now and I will try to calm down. The weekend was not too bad, I had a generally good time. I just wished the whole time that I could be at my house, alone, reading Pride and Prejudice (which I finished and really, really enjoyed!).

Whoo, I am wiped out. Went on a completely-necessary-kitchen-shopping-spree and got, oh, knives and spoons and a spatula and measuring cups and much more. Also stopped by The House to pick up a few last things (baking stuff I left, some plates and bowls) and just to generally clean. Now I'm back at home, wanting to eat and work on crafts, but am too exhausted for the effort.
I am really, really, really tempted to order a pizza now, and have it delivered, 'cause I can totally do that! A whole pizza, though, by my self seems a little extreme, especially since I'm going away for the weekend.

Going to Iowa tomorrow for Collin's graduation. I bought JUST enough food to last me until tomorrow. It was pure luck, but it's working out perfectly. Adam and Janel are picking me up at 10 am. Yes, that's right, Adam AND Janel AND me, together at last. In a car. For seven hours. Yep.

Cooking shows make me angry. They make it look so easy because they have everything all pre-prepared and they don't have to clean and they're such jerks and I want that chicken salad.

Just saw a commercial for Stargate Universe on the SciFi network! I am so very excited! It's coming in Fall 09, so I will probably be able to watch it! Or at least part of it.

House-Living-Alone is going well! I shower in the basement because the bathroom is bathtub-only. It's quieter than I had expected. I hadn't realized how essential outdoor-noises were to my sleep habits. Also, how adverse cable is.

Grades come out tomorrow! I'm not too worried, probably B's and maybe an A or two. Still looking forward to checking it out.

Okay, have been distracted by cable again, see you...

I have moved! Now I no longer have a decent reason for never updating, because I have the internet! It is wonderful.

I'm still trying to get everything moved in, because I have a LOT of crap. It's hard to find place for everything, and moving aside all my mom's stuff to make room is exhausting. I've got the kitchen and bathroom down, and most of my books and movies out. However, I've got a TON of crafting and costuming stuff and nowhere to put it! I don't want to leave all of it in the boxes and bags I moved them in, but I haven't got much place to stow them.

I also discovered I have no knives, bowls, or plates. Well, I have a few hand-made bowls and ONE plate that I brought with me, but it is clear I gotta get some dinnerwear. Also, some food.

One of the kitties, Pujols, slipped her collar almost as soon as I closed the door, and I haven't been able to catch her to get it back on. If she thinks she's getting outside without her collar, she is so so wrong. In related news, I am right on my way to being a totally crazy cat lady.

Cable is WONDERFUL. I just finished watching a show on Animal Planet that was about, I kid you not, colossal squids! It was serendipitous! I wanted to watch some SciFi Channel, but all they're showing is BloodRayne. Also, I can see what BBC is playing, but I apparently don't get to watch it. Boo!

More updates as soon as they happen now that I have internet!

For Jackie and also a wee update [May. 2nd, 2009|08:42 pm]
Here! Sorry I didn't get to it sooner. Better late than never, eh?

Happy Free Comic Book Day! I got many comics! I got some comics, plus TWO Stargate Action Figures (Teal-c and Sam! 5 bucks each!), Devi (touted as "India's First Superheroine/plus-it-was-free), Astro City - Confessions, The Hiketeia (a Wonder Woman book), and a bunch of the newest Wonder Woman comics. So! A good haul!

Had dinner with my mom as well, discussing me moving into her sweet, tiny home for the next six months whilst she's away at Yellowstone. I am excited, guys. BOX FORT!

Happy Poetry Month! [Apr. 13th, 2009|12:56 pm]
[Current Music |"Nantucket Girl" - The Tossers]

Poetry Month! I celebrate with a poem I just discovered was a poem. I mean, I had heard it in song-form by The Tossers (It's pretty much my new favorite song), but I had no idea it was originally a poem. I can't find the whole poem, so you'll have to do with what I can find. So here, enjoy!

Then I'll haste to wed a sailor and send him off to sea
For a life of independence is the pleasant life for me
But every now and then I would like to see his face
For it always seems to me to beam with a manly grace
With his brow so nobly open and his dark and kindly eye
Oh my heart beats fondly towards him whenever he is nigh
But when he says goodbye me love I'm off across the sea
First I cry for his departure then I laugh because I'm free

-- Eliza Brock, 18th Century Islander

That's all I've got time for, on account of the 10 page paper, 7 page rough draft, 10 poem-revisions, and 70 pages of reading due tomorrow that I need to get on. Wish me luuuuuck!

It's Wacky Adventure Friday! [Apr. 3rd, 2009|04:05 pm]
[Current Mood | excited]

So, I roll through a stop sign without reaaaally stopping, and I see a cop car a-waiting in a lot next to me. The copper rolls out of the lot as I pass by, and I'm super worried that he's going to flash his lights on me, so I pull into the parking lot of an apartment building. The copper just keeps on driving (was he going to pull me over? Don't know, but I do know he wouldn't do it if he thought I lived in this building). There's a lady sitting out front on the sidewalk, so I grab a pen and paper and make like I'm writing down the phone number of an Apartment-to-Rent sign in the lawn (which I already had, and had called with no luck). The lady yells at me, asking if I'm writing down the number, and I say yes, and she says she's the landlord, and would I like to take a tour?

Half hour later, I'm filling out an application. Boom! It's a sweet, two-bedroom apartment in the middle of town, with a big kitchen, a balcony AND a back porch (for grilling? Oh yeah!) Rent is only $600 a month, including some utilities. I don't have it for sure, but she's got three apartments and I think I made a pretty good impression (I did not mention being on the run from the cops). Plus, two of my friends used to live in the building, so the lady totally loved me! AND I need a roommate.

But how exciting! What a day!

(Oh! Also, Jackie, Vickie, how much was rent for the apartment you guys were in down here in the Ville? And did it include utilities?)
